Coltrane – Younger – Douglas
A completely new project that will find in the Auditorium Giovanni Arvedi the ideal place to come to light is “For Turiya Trio”. The protagonist of this première, which will take place at Cremona Jazz 2016, is the saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of a legend like John, and Alice, jazz musician.
Ravi will be performing with a chamber group – besides himself on tenor and soprano, Brandee Younger and Dezron Douglas on harp and double bass – in a concert dedicated to his mother who, very devoted to the guru Sai Baba, had taken the name of Turiya, a term meaning in Hindu philosophy a state of pure consciousness. Alice Coltrane was a jazz musician, multi-instrumentalist, playing the piano, the organ and the harp, with a long musical career that began even before knowing the famous husband, and continued after his untimely death in 1967. She has had a very big influence on her son Ravi, so as to encourage and support him until he started again to perform and record after a long absence from the scene. So”For Turiya Trio” is not just a new project for Ravi but also a way to express all the gratitude and love that has bound him to her mother.
Ravi Coltrane is saxophonist and composer. During his more than twenty-year career, he has recorded many albums both alongside great jazz musicians and as a leader himself. It is one of the founders of the independent label RKM. Born in Long Island, he is the second son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane. He was named after the Indian sitar legend, Ravi Shankar. His first work as a leader, “Moving Pictures”, was released in 1998 and five other records followed in the years ahead, the last of them, “Spirit Fiction” (2012), published by Blue Note. Growing up in a fertile and creative musical environment and supported by experienced and trained musicians – like Elvis Jones, Jack Dejohnette and Rashied Ali- he has reached the top in the international music scene, working with big names like Steve Coleman and Geri Allen, before founding the Grand Central with an
other saxophonist, Antoine Roney. Nowadays he’s also working in various major projects about the rediscovery of his parents’ records. “For Turiya Trio” is one of the most emblematic.
